HOW TO PERFORM WUDU (ABLUTION)

Wudu is the ritual purification required before prayer. Follow these simple steps to perform it correctly. Swipe or use arrow keys to navigate.

Intention (Niyyah)

๐Ÿ’ญ

Make the intention in your heart to perform wudu for the sake of purification and prayer. You don't have to say it out loud.

Tip: An intention is a firm resolution inside your heart. With the intention being present in the heart, it is preferable to verbally pronounce it. Hence you should say, 'I am doing Wudu in order to fulfil a commandment of Allah Almighty and attain purity'.

Say Bismillah

Begin by saying "Bismillah" (In the name of Allah). This is Sunnah and earns you reward.

Tip: Starting with Allah's name brings barakah (blessings) to your wudu.

Wash Your Hands

Wash both hands up to the wrists three times, making sure water reaches between the fingers. And do Khilal [i.e. pass the fingers of one hand through the gaps of the fingers of the other rubbing them together].

Tip: Rub your hands together and clean between your fingers thoroughly.

Rinse Your Mouth

Take water in your right hand and rinse your mouth three times, ensuring that the water reach all parts of the mouth (up to the throat) each time. Gargle too, if you are not observing Sawm (Fast).

Tip: Make sure to rinse thoroughly.

Rinse Your Nose

Sniff water into your nostrils three times using your right hand, then blow it out. Now clean your nose using your left hand (with the tap closed) and insert your smallest finger into your nostrils.

Tip: Be gentle when rinsing your nose. Sniff lightly and blow out softly.

Wash Your Face

Pour water on every part of your entire face from the top of your forehead, i.e. the hairline, to below your chin and from one earlobe to the other three times.

Tip: Use both hands to wash your face thoroughly, ensuring no dry spots remain.

Wash Your Arms

Wash your right forearm from the tips of your fingers up to and including your elbow three times and wash your left forearm in the same way.

Tip: Make sure to include the elbows and wash thoroughly up to and including them.

Wipe Your Head

Wet your hands and without using the water elsewhere i.e. for closing the tap or fixingย clothesย etc, wipe over your head once, starting from the front and moving to the back, then return to the front. Excluding the index fingers and thumbs, join the tips of the three fingers of both hands and place them on the skin or hair of the forehead.

Tip: Use your wet fingers to wipe from forehead to the back of your head, then back again.

Wipe Your Ears

Using the same water from wiping your head, use your index fingers to wipe the insides of your ears; your thumbs to wipe the backs of your ears; insert your small fingers into the openings of your ears, and wipe the back of your neck using the backs of the fingers of both hands.

Tip: Use your index fingers for the inside of your ears and thumbs for the outside.

Wash Your Feet

Wash both feet three times, first the right and then the left, beginning from the toes up to the top of the ankles. It is Mustahab to wash feet up to the half shin three times. It is Sunnah to do Khilal of the toes of both feet.

Tip: Use your little finger of the left hand to clean between your toes, starting with the right foot.
