What is Ghusl?

🚿

Ghusl is the Islamic ritual of washing the entire body with water. It is obligatory in certain situations and highly recommended in others.

When is Ghusl Obligatory?

  • After sexual intercourse
  • Discharge of semen from its organ after leaving its origin due to lust
  • After menstruation ends
  • After post-natal bleeding ends
  • Wet dream
Note: Ghusl is also recommended (Sunnah) on Fridays before Jummah prayer, before the two Eid prayers.

Make the Intention (Niyyah)

💭

Begin by making the intention in your heart to perform ghusl for the sake of purification without uttering any word with tongue.

Tip: Simply think in your heart: "I am performing ghusl to attain purity for the pleasure of Allah."

Say Bismillah

🕌
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ

Say "Bismillah" (In the name of Allah) before entering the bathroom. This brings blessing to your act of purification.

Wash Your Hands

🤲

Wash both hands up to the wrists three times, making sure water reaches between the fingers. And do Khilal [i.e. pass the fingers of one hand through the gaps of the fingers of the other rubbing them together].

Tip: Make sure to clean between your fingers thoroughly.

Wash Private Parts

🚿

Wash the private parts thoroughly, removing any impurities. Use your left hand for this purpose.

Note: This step is essential for purification. Ensure complete cleanliness before moving forward.

Perform Complete Wudu

💧

Perform wudu (ablution) as you would for prayer, including rinsing the mouth and nose, washing the face, arms, wiping the head and ears, but do not wash feet. In case of performing Ghusl on some stool, wash feet as well.

Tip: Some scholars say you can delay washing your feet until after completing the full bath if you're standing in water.

Pour Water Over Right Shoulder

➡️

Pour water over your right shoulder three times, ensuring the water flows down the entire right side of your body.

Tip: Following the Sunnah of starting with the right side brings additional reward. Rub your body with your hands to help water reach all areas.
Important: Do not face towards Qibla during Ghusl. Rub all parts of your body with your hands during the bath.

Pour Water Over Left Shoulder

⬅️

Pour water over your left shoulder three times, ensuring the water flows down the entire left side of your body.

Tip: Use your hands to rub and ensure water reaches every part of the left side of your body.

Pour Water Over Your Head

🧖

Pour water over your head three times, ensuring the water reaches the roots of your hair and scalp. Massage your scalp to ensure thorough wetting.

For Women: Women do not need to undo their braids or plaits. Unless the hair is very tight and water does not reach roots Water must reach the roots of the hair.

Pour Water Over Your Entire Body

🛁

Pour water over your entire body three times, ensuring that not a single hair-breadth of your body remains dry. Rub your body with your hands to help the water reach everywhere.

Take extra precaution when washing these:

  • Every part of the head including hair
  • The ears
  • Under the armpits
  • The navel
  • Between fingers and toes
  • Every part of the body without exception
Privacy: Take bath at a place where nobody can see you. If in an open area, where there is a chance a person may see you then cover your sitr. Men should cover their Sitr (from navel up to and including knees) with a thick cloth. Women must take even more caution for privacy.
Tip: Neither talk during Ghusl nor recite any invocation while performing it.

Wash Your Feet (If Not Done Earlier)

🦶

Now shift apart from the place of Ghusl and wash your feet thoroughly if they were not washed during Wudu, including between the toes.

Tip: This step applies if you performed wudu while standing in water or in a place where water accumulates. Move to a clean, dry area before washing your feet.

Ghusl Completed!

🤲

Translation: "I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah Almighty. He is alone and He has no partner and I testify that Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) is his (Distinguished) Bondman and His Prophet."
